Aching Feet

Aching FeetFeet are the unsung heroes that carry us, more or less without complaint on our journey through life. We usually give them attention only if they ache or feel pain.

We abuse them with ill-fitting footwear, by cutting toenails incorrectly, weighing too much and standing for too long. Let’s give our feet a bit of loving care.

At some point, most of us have experienced aching feet, whether it’s after a long day of work or play. Here are some ideas that will help you feel better.

Recipes:

Foot and Leg Gel

Because this gel isn’t greasy, it can be used anywhere, anytime. Keep a little container of it in your pocket or purse so you can gently smooth it over tired feet and legs when necessary. It is a lovely soothing treatment for those times when your legs ache but you can’t have a footbath and don’t want to use an oil.

6 tsp. (30 mL) unscented aloe vera gel

8 drops peppermint essential oil

In a small non-reactive bowl, combine aloe vera gel and peppermint essential oil. Mix thoroughly. Transfer to a small (1 oz. / 30 mL) resealable glass jar. Store in a dark, cool place.

Makes 1 oz. (30 mL)

 

Soothing Foot Lotion

If your work involves a lot of standing, your feet are probably aching and swollen when you get home. Make the following lotion and treat your feet daily.

1/2 cup (125 mL) unscented lotion

10 drops grapefruit essential oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

10 drops black pepper essential oil

10 drops rosemary essential oil

5 drops thyme essential oil

In a 4 oz. (125 mL) PET plastic bottle, combine half of the unscented lotion and the essential oils. Shake vigorously to blend. Add the remaining lotion, leaving about 1/2 inch (1 cm) headspace, and shake vigorously to combine.

Tip: Decanting unscented lotion into a smaller bottle to blend with essential oils can be a very messy proposition. Using a pump dispenser makes it easy to fill a smaller bottle. Always add a small amount of lotion to your PET plastic bottle at first, then the essential oils, and shake to blend.   Then add the remaining lotion, and shake again. This helps to disperse the oils more evenly in the lotion.

Makes 1/2 cup (125 mL)

 

Foot-Ease Oil

For an exquisitely relaxing experience, use this blend alone or after a footbath.

4 tsp. (20 mL) grapeseed or sweet almond oil

2 tsp. (10 ml) avocado oil

2 tsp. (10 mL) jojoba oil

1 tsp. (5 mL) wheat germ oil or 2 capsules vitamin E (250 IU)

1 tsp. (5 mL) vodka

10 drops rosemary essential oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

5 drops sandalwood essential oil

In a 2 oz. (60 mL) glass bottle, combine the oils, vodka, and essential oils. Shake to blend. Store in a dark, cool place. Shake before use.

Caution: Avoid wheat germ oil if you have a wheat or gluten allergy. Substitute vitamin E as indicated in the recipe. Pierce the capsules with a clean, sharp knife and squeeze the oil into the blend. Vitamin E is also available in dropper bottles, in which case add 2 drops.

Makes 2 oz. (60 mL)

 

Treatments:

Foot and leg massage: Pour a little Foot and Leg Gel or Foot-Ease Oil into the palm of your hand and massage over your feet and ankles and up to the calves on each leg. Pour a little Soothing Foot Lotion into the palm of your hand and massage over your feet.

Footbath: In a non-reactive basin large enough to fit your feet comfortably, combine 1/2 cup (125 mL) Epsom salts and, 1 drop at a time, 6 drops of your chosen essential oil(s), stirring after each addition to avoid clumping. Fill the basin with warm water and agitate to disperse oil and salts. Soak for 10 minutes. Follow with a foot massage using Foot-Ease Oil.
