LavenderLavender has been appreciated for thousands of years, and today must be the most loved – and used – essential oil.  It is probably the oil with the widest and most impressive list of applications.

If you can afford only one oil, choose lavender.  It is very safe, versatile and gentle.  It may even be used undiluted over small areas.

The essential oil is steam distilled from the plant’s flowering tops and aromatic leaves.  Lavender essential oil, with its balancing qualities, is primarily thought of as calming and releasing, but it is also anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antispasmodic, stimulating to the immune system, and somewhat analgesic.

Lavender is one of the most valuable oils for skincare and skin conditions.  It stimulates the growth of new cells, kills bacteria, is antibiotic and antiviral, prevents scarring and eases pain.  Use it to treat abscesses, acne, allergies, athlete’s foot, boils, bruises, inflammations, dermatitis, eczema, insect bites and stings (and as a insect repellent), psoriasis, scabies, sunburn, minor burns and scalds, sores, pimples and wounds.  Include it in deodorants too – it reduces body odor.

Lavender increases energy, quickens the function of glands and strengthens bodily systems.  It eases problems with the digestive, respiratory and urinary systems, relieves cramps and spasms in the intestines and uterus, and stimulates bile production.  It will help expel gas from the intestines and encourage and regulate menstrual flow.

Lavender’s antiseptic antiviral and antibiotic properties, combined with it’s ability to loosen and expel mucus, make it an ideal oil to use as an inhalation and chest rub for bronchitis, coughs, colds, laryngitis, excess mucus and throat infections.

Lavender is renowned for its effective relief of the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, lumbago, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism, sciatica and muscular pain arising from tension.  The best way of utilizing lavender oil for these problems is in a synergistic massage or bath blend with other oils, where it will strengthen their properties.  One study, conducted on 48 patients, revealed that inhalation of lavender essential oil reduced the need for analgesic medications in children aged 6 to 12 after a tonsillectomy.

When researchers investigated the protective effect t of lavender oil against brain swelling due to stroke, the oil was found to offer neuroprotection.  It increased the blood supply to the brain by clearing obstructions in blood vessels.

Beautiful lavender is the great leveler.  It can create calm and order from mental chaos to harmonize and balance every aspect of our bodies and minds.  It reduced stress and calms the nervous system, lifts depression and eases headaches and insomnia.
